The app helps you with transcribing any Korean expressions in IPA symbols, and you can start from there in your phonological inquiry. You may also want to check out how the representations in IPA change as you apply (or not apply) a phonological rule.

2. 초간단 사용법 설명

3. Transcribing Hangul한글

한글 (Hangul or Hangeul) is the default writing system natively used in both North and South Korea for everyday uses. Unsurprisingly, Korean speakers generally do not use on other systems. Using Chinese characters is not the norm among the speakers, let alone the Latin alphabet. However, for linguistic research of Korean, there are two obvious downsides of writing in Hangul. First, the international audience does not readily recognize Hangul. Second, Hangul is syllabic, meaning that representing sub-syllabic structures is difficult with it.

Therefore, researchers need a means of converting Hangul characters. Hangul phonemically represents monomorphemic words faithfully, so there is a fairly reliable correspondence between each sub-component of Hangul (called 자모 camo) and an IPA symbol.

The target audience of this program is researchers in Korean linguistics who may find it tedious to blindly translate one phonemic system (i.e., Hangul) to another. The original motivation for this web application was to automatically convert 한글 into IPA symbols, e.g., [hɑŋɡɯl], hence the name Hangul to IPA.

In addition to the IPA system, it can also convert Hangul to the Yale Romanization system. The Yale system is the de facto standard romanization for Korean among the English-speaking researchers and librarians. Other romanization conventions include the Revised Romanization of Korean (RR), McCune-Reischauer (MR), and Romanization of Korean (RK). RR is the standard in South Korea and the K-pop fandom. Phonological rules in Korean

This web app is an automaton that blindly applies SPE-styled phonological rules to an underlying form. The Hangul input is assumed to be a faithful representation of the underlying representation. These rules are not sensitive to an extra-phonological environment. Therefore, the results of the app can differ a lot from the actual pronunciation. Take this as a disclaimer!! For reference on the rules applied in this app, please see Shin, Kiaer, and Cha (2012) Ch. 8.

K-SPAN (Holliday, Turnbull, and Eychenne 2017) is a similar but quite different resource on applying phonological rules to Korean words. The difference is that this web app allows Hangul non-words. You can even enter something like ㅋㅋㄹㅃㅃ.
